About This Novel
This is an epistolary novel that expresses women's awakening, pursuit of independence and freedom, and female friendship. It tells the story of Celie, a black girl in the southern United States at the beginning of the 20th century who lived a miserable but tenacious life for most of her life. When she was a girl, she was forced to marry a widower who had four children. Her husband loved someone else and abused her in every possible way until she met her husband's former lover, the singer Shug. Inspired and infected by Shug, Celie began to observe the world with new eyes, learned to resist the violence of patriarchy, and fought for her own rights. After discovering that her husband had been hiding letters from her sister Nellie for many years, an angry Celie decided to run away and follow Shug to Memphis, where Celie truly lived an independent life through labor. At the end of the story, Celie reaches a reconciliation with her sincere and repentant husband. The two are no longer husband and wife, but become friends, and are finally reunited with her sister who returned from missionary work in Africa and her long-lost children.
