"The Buddenbrooks" is Germany's first elegant realist novel, and Thomas Mann won the Nobel Prize for Literature. In 1901, Mann became famous in the literary world for writing this debut novel, showing his prominence. By the time he won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1929, the book had sold over a million copies. The Swedish Academy stated that the Nobel Prize was awarded to Mann mainly for this "great work", calling it "Germany's first elegant realistic novel".
