"The Buddenbrooks" is Germany's first elegant realist novel, and Thomas Mann won the Nobel Prize for Literature. In 1901, Mann became famous in the literary world for writing this debut novel, showing his prominence. By the time he won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1929, the book had sold over a million copies. The Swedish Academy stated that the Nobel Prize was awarded to Mann mainly for this "great work", calling it "Germany's first elegant realistic novel". Four generations of the Buddenbrook family, more than 400 characters, and half a century of narrative time are condensed into more than 600 pages.
