About This Novel

Flatland: A Romance of Many Dimensions is a satirical novella published in 1884 by British teacher Edwin Abbott Abbott. Abbott used the fictional two-dimensional flat country's national "square" in this book to express a sharp commentary on the class system of the Victorian era. The novella's longer-term contribution, however, is its examination of dimensionality. Among the many editions of this book, there is a preface written by the famous science fiction writer Isaac Asimov, who commented that "Flatland" is "the best way one can find to feel the concept of dimensions." The book therefore remains popular with students of mathematics, physics, and computer science. Additionally, several movies have been adapted from the book. It can be used as an introductory book to the recently popular "Interstellar".
