Field of Life and Death (red Classic)
by Xiao Hong
About This Novel
This book is an anthology of Xiao Hong's novels, including three novels: "The Field of Life and Death", "The Bridge" and "The Story of Hulan River". "The Field of Life and Death" uses the technique of group portraits to tell the story of villagers in a small village on the outskirts of Harbin in the 1930s. The closed and backward countryside has caused spiritual desolation and emptiness among the villagers, while the exploitation and oppression of the landlords has brought them the reality of living in poverty despite working all year round. Numbness and ignorance spread among them. The Japanese invasion brought far more pain to the villagers than before. Many villagers died and fled, and a small number of them joined various anti-Japanese teams. Erliban, who used to be passive and slack during the war against Japan, lost his wife and children, and wanted to join the revolutionary army but was ridiculed by the distrust of the villagers. However, he still said goodbye to his old sheep and followed Li Qingshan lamely to the city to join the team. The hills and woods gradually faded away, leaving only the old sheep neighing.
