About This Novel

Chekhov's distinctive feature is his ability to reveal the essence of life from the most ordinary phenomena. He highly downplays the plot and only intercepts ordinary daily life fragments. He uses exquisite artistic details to truly depict and portray life and characters, and to reveal important social phenomena. But he does not fall into the "quagmire" of daily life. On the contrary, his profound realist images are often sublimated into philosophical symbols. In terms of showing the characters' inner world, Chekhov did not focus on explaining the characters' psychological activities in detail, but only tried to see the characters' inner activities and changes from their behaviors.

My heart is so numb, I can understand why I don't want to help my brother, but I can do the same to my own mother, refusing to care and evading criticism.

The nail and the death of a civil servant both show the ugly state of Tsarist Russia in the officialdom: the strong are overbearing, arrogant and domineering, while the weak bow their heads and dare not resist. The psychology of the bug-like Chervyakov and his minions was the product of this official life.

The kind of satire written by Chameleon is deeply rooted in people's hearts and is indelible. The appropriate title alone will make people unforgettable. Many times I have used this word to throw people around, whether it is a joke or a real thing, it couldn't be more appropriate...

This is the first time I heard that a negative is a positive. I can understand it a little bit with some skin polishing.

For Russian literature, I read "Quiet Don" and most of Tolstoy and Turgenev's works. After reading Chekhov's works this time, I found that Chekhov's articles are also unique, as if they were written by the author himself through vomiting blood and scratched out with a rough knife. I saw deeply the deep distress in Mother Russia. I originally like realistic articles, but after reading these novels by Chekhov, I felt that Turgenev wrote too many romance novels. When I was a child, Chekhov's "The Chameleon" and "The Man in the Trap" were in my textbooks. I think these two articles are full of irony, but they are not Chekhov's best works. My favorites are "Prairie (Travel)", "My Life", "Peasants", and some short stories, such as "Agaphia", "Cold Blood" and "Witch".

The Chameleon tells us: In the Tsarist Russian general's house, a dog was more important than the common people. Patrol officers like Ochumelov wagged their tails and begged for mercy in front of the powerful people's dogs, but they showed their teeth and claws to the common people and were arrogant and pampering. The chameleon is a mirror and a warning given to the world by Chekhov. Today, more than a hundred years later, there are still people who have the servility of a "chameleon" and are different from what they appear to be.
