About This Novel
Chekhov is a world-class master of short stories in Russia and the last critical realist art master in Russia in the late 19th century. Together with the French writer Maupassant and the American writer O. Henry, he is known as one of the "three major short story writers in the world". This collection contains 7 articles. "The Sixth Ward" describes a hospital in a small city, full of corruption, violence, and crime, and becomes a microcosm of the darkness of society under the reactionary rule of the Russian Empire. In hospitals, the wards for mental patients have become prisons, and healthy people are also locked up in them. This novel criticized the brutality of the Russian autocratic system and effectively proved that the only way for the people to relieve their suffering is to fight.
