The Decisive Battle: Records of the Fourth Field Campaign (1946-1950)
About This Novel
In October 1948, in the first stage of the Liaoshen Campaign, the main force of the Northeast Field Army of the People's Liberation Army launched a critical campaign against the Kuomintang army defending Jinzhou, Liaoning. The Battle of Jinzhou was a decisive battle between the Kuomintang and the Communist Party in the Northeast during the War of Liberation. Hundreds of thousands of Kuomintang troops were annihilated, and Fan Hanjie, deputy commander-in-chief of the Kuomintang's Northeast "Suppression General", and Lu Junquan, commander of the 6th Corps, were captured. Jinzhou, the chokepoint between the Kuomintang army in the Northeast and the interior of the pass, was tightly strangled by the People's Liberation Army. In October 1948, the Northeast Field Army of the People's Liberation Army launched a large-scale encirclement and annihilation campaign against the Kuomintang Army in the areas east of Heishan and Dahu Mountain in western Liaoning Province. In this battle, more than 100,000 people from the 9th Corps of the Kuomintang Army were wiped out, and Liao Yaoxiang, a fellow commander of the Corps, was captured alive, thus achieving a decisive victory in the Liaoshen Campaign. After the peaceful liberation of Changsha, the Kuomintang army's Bai Chongxi clique retreated to the southern Hunan area centered on Hengyang and Baoqing (today's Shaoyang) in an attempt to echo the Yu Hanmou clique and Song Xilian clique to prevent the People's Liberation Army from advancing into Guangdong and Guangxi and block "half of the Kuomintang's southwestern territory." From September 13 to October 11, 1949, the People's Liberation Army fought fierce battles with Bai Chongxi's troops on the Hengbao front line, and finally annihilated most of its main forces, shattering Bai Chongxi's dream of ruling by dividing the river. On October 2, 1949, the East Route Army of the Fourth Field Army of the People's Liberation Army launched the Guangdong Campaign in three groups and launched an attack on the Kuomintang defenders in Guangdong. The Kuomintang army had no fighting spirit and was retreating steadily. The People's Liberation Army entered Guangzhou on the night of the 14th. Under the devastating and fierce offensive of the People's Liberation Army, part of the Kuomintang army withdrew to Guangxi, and the main force fled to the Leizhou Peninsula. By the 24th, the People's Liberation Army had wiped out more than 40,000 people who had fled from the enemy in the Yangjiang and Yangchun areas.
