About This Novel

The 1960s and 1970s were an era of spiritual introspection for young people in Europe and the United States. Hermann Hesse's "Siddhartha" became an instant classic. The spiritual journey similar to this book was also written into the songs of youth rock by many pop singers and bands. The book became the inspiration for Nick Drake, a Van Gogh-esque figure in rock history. It was also appreciated by the American "Beat" writer Henry Miller. The famous Taiwanese dance company Cloud Gate Dance Theater's repertoire "Song of the Wanderer" is adapted from this. The translation of this book comes from Ms. Su Nianqiu, a famous Taiwanese translator and essayist who has earlier studied the translation of Hesse's works. It provides an excellent translation choice for the majority of domestic lovers of Hesse's works.

I understand this book

Let me talk about the author Hesse first. When I first read this book, it was very boring. As I read further, I felt a different feeling. The simple words are actually full of rich emotions. It's like a stream that gathers slowly, clear and slow. In this way, I finished reading this book with high respect.

The rules of the world bind hands and feet and cover the five senses. From birth to death, people try to untie the ropes on their bodies to understand the true appearance of this world. Don't see the end point at once, don't simply pursue meaning. The happiest people in the world happen to understand everything before they die. If you lose those ropes too early, you will fall into an empty float; if you lose those ropes too late, you will never see the true appearance of the world.

The translation of this version is too strange. I suggest you read another version.

The general principles in the front are too subjective, long and voluminous, and the translation in the back is too rough. I almost missed a good book because of this.

Thoughts after reading

It's not suitable for me to read, I can't understand it, and I can't understand the author's meaning. Siddhartha experienced the transformation from a Brahmin to a Samana, then to himself, and then to a ferryman, and finally found faith, believing in all things in the world, and no longer believed in a certain doctrine or thought.

Siddhartha

Everything in existence seems to me good - death as good as life, sin as good as holiness, wisdom as good as folly. Everything is necessary, everything requires from me only my approval, my acknowledgment, my kind understanding. Everything is what I want, everything is in my favor, and nothing can hurt me. We spend our whole lives looking for the true "me", and when we wake up at a certain moment in life, I hope we can discover and love ourselves as soon as possible.

He deeply felt a great love and the most humble respect. He bowed deeply in front of the man, his head touching the ground. The man sat there motionless, and his peaceful smile reminded him of everything he had loved in his life, and everything precious and sacred in his life. It feels like Siddhartha spent his whole life searching and pursuing, and in the end, he was glad that he had found what he had been searching for. The things you pursue that you think are intangible are just all you have experienced in your life. We have always had it, and we have always forgotten it.

The opposite of every truth is also true. For example, a truth, if it is a one-sided truth, can only be expressed in words, and it can only be expressed within the capabilities of words. Everything, if thought about with thoughts and expressed with words, is one-sided and only half the truth. It lacks completeness, perfection and unity. Thinking, reincarnation, nirvana.

It seems that you are not reading a novel, but you are understanding an artistic conception, learning a profound wisdom, and learning to put aside worldly perspectives to find your true self.
