About This Novel

Grossman uses a Tolstoyan grand perspective and realistic writing style to narrate the experiences of the Shaposhnikov family during the Soviet Patriotic War, and connects hundreds of characters and a series of intersecting historical events through the experiences of family members. The pain of history, the abuses of reality, and the difficult situation of human nature under the double crushing force of totalitarianism and war are all included in vivid and profound details. Grossman is "the first writer to rise up against Soviet totalitarianism after World War II." His unique experience and humanitarian courage make this book shocking enough to scare the powerful, and it can be called a beacon of freedom in Soviet Russian literature. This book contains elegies and reflections on the Nazi extermination camps and the Soviet Gulag, philosophical thoughts and discussions on life, politics and historical destiny, and a depiction of the struggle between the extreme evil and subtle kindness of human nature... It is still deeply shocking when I read it today.

This is life, this is destiny, and the vast differences of the times cannot change the nature of the two. No matter when and where you live, life and destiny are like heaven and earth, day and night, men and women... When you need to use the duality method, they will automatically separate; when you feel that the two can be integrated, they will become everything. It is like Tai Chi composed of yin and yang fish, except that our life and destiny are much more real. It is composed of every second of breathing, every minute of mood, every hour of behavior, and every day of experience. How heavy it is, and how unworthy of mentioning it. Life and destiny are like the feathers on the top of Mount Tai, like the ants at the soles of the giants. Just like I am writing my review, at the same time, there are billions of people doing other things, and we don't care about each other, but we are closely connected.

Smooth but turbulent, Grossman does not have too many gorgeous or magical words. Li Gang's translation is excellent and in place, showing this ordinary momentum. Russian literature always has such a force, whether it is Dostoyevsky, Gogol, or Chekhov, even if the writing styles are very different, there is no difference in this force. This is the strength gained from deep suffering, or the result of a deep love for life. I don't know that Russia's geographical environment gave birth to this strength, so tenacious and unyielding, with such bastards and scoundrels, so timeless and refined, and so rough and savage.

When I read Victor's ups and downs, I deeply felt the despicability of human nature. This despicability is not a derogatory sense, but an innate biological instinct for the purpose of survival. This is more like an evolved animal nature. Could it be said that the so-called human nature only represents the socialized and political desire for survival? Grossman doesn't give answers, but he gives real humanity. Human nature can shine brightly, but it can also be despicable and dirty, it can drive away darkness, and it can also bring haze.
