About This Novel
This is a tragic story that revolves around the endless life, honor and disgrace, and life and death dependence between farmers, their land and their homes. The play shows the educational progress and cultural changes in the closed villages of Yixian County, Hebei Province in the central Hebei Plain, the farmers' deep-rooted love for the land and home, and their unrestrained attitude in troubled times. It expresses the traditional Chinese concept of worshiping the land and the deep understanding of the homeland. In particular, it shows the national integrity and unyielding will of farmers who fought tooth and nail to defend their land and homes in the face of the powerful Japanese invaders. It has created unique and rich artistic images such as Jing Guofang, Fan Dashou and Zeng Sanguo. The whole book is full of the simple folk customs of the countryside in the central Hebei plain and the generous and tragic epic style of the people of Yan and Zhao.
