About This Novel

"Steppenwolf" is Hesse's novel published in 1927, with a strong autobiographical flavor. It is a literary expression in which Hermann Hesse investigates the protagonist Harry Haller and strives to reveal and resolve his conflicts with popular culture, industrial society and the power class, as well as his deep psychological crisis. The novel switches between creative multiple perspectives, including the anonymous publisher, a manual called "On Steppenwolf", and Harry himself, showing readers a vivid picture of civil society and the marginalized Steppenwolf during the period of dissociation.

This book is indeed a bit obscure for me. Perhaps I have not experienced the author's intense inner conflict and suffering, and I have not been able to experience it personally. I hope that when I have the opportunity to read this book again in the future, I can have a deeper experience, just like the experience of a bullet being shot and hitting my chest at this moment. Harry in the article considers himself a Steppenwolf, a figure between the immortal and the civil class. He can neither pursue ideals and immortality like Strickland in The Moon and Sixpence, nor integrate into the civil class he despises. The ambivalence made him miserable.
