About This Novel

"The Blue-Eyed Thief" is the posthumous work of Altamirano, a famous Mexican writer in the 19th century, and is also his masterpiece. Originally named El Zarco, the author's manuscript once had a subtitle: "Anecdotes of Life in Mexico from 1861 to 1863." It can be seen that the work describes the difficult situation of the republican government headed by President Juarez and the era when Mexico was experiencing internal and external troubles. "Blue Eyed Thief" presents the image of a dangerous and cruel desperado. The handsome criminal leader Blue Eyed Thief and his bandit buddies burn and rob powerless civilians for their own selfish interests. At the same time, he uses his romantic and glorious revolutionary image to deceive the admiration and love of the kind-hearted rich girl Manuela, and induce Manuela to risk elopement with him. In the end, during the encirclement and suppression, both the Blue-Eyed Thief and Manuela died.
