About This Novel

"South and North" is Mrs. Gaskell's masterpiece and her most important work, describing the class struggle in Manchester. She contrasted the economically backward South with the industrially developed North, and created an ideal capitalist who possessed both the shrewdness and ability of northern business owners and the cultural accomplishments of southerners. He was able to reconcile the opposition between labor and capital, and finally revitalized the enterprise.
