Sounds from the Earth
by Chen Jiyi
About This Novel
"Voices from the Earth" is a new collection of novels by Chen Jiyi, winner of the "October" Emerging Character Award. It tells three stories that happened in Wucun, Zhejiang: the talented hunchback and the Wu Opera troupe experienced rise and fall in the mountain villages and cities; the young people from the mountain village went to the small town to go to the market and got into conflicts and entanglements with the castration; and the adopted orphans illuminated the world and lives of others. Chen Jiyi puts the characters in a dark situation, and uses a calm, smooth and powerful narrative to write about the love and pain, persistence and persistence of ordinary people in rural areas in the changing times, reflecting from one side the agitation and changes in the social transformation of southern China's rural areas. The entire collection of novels has a distinct southern tone, and the establishment of this tone does not only come from the Jiangnan sentiment in the traditional sense. The author embeds the heterogeneous sense of avant-garde literature in realism techniques, giving this southern narrative a different weight.
