The book was written after the victory of the Anti-Japanese War. It began serialization in 1946 and was completed at the end of 1948. It lasted for more than three years. It was Zhang Henshui's "painful experience". With a cold and rational writing style, while accusing the Japanese atrocities of the war, the author also explored the national psychology and analyzed the "evil character" displayed by the Chinese people in the war of resistance. The novel takes the protagonist Li Nanquan as the axis, showing readers a picture of all living beings in the mountain village of eastern Shu. The characters are lifelike, the language is humorous and sharp, and the novel's descriptive skills have reached a level of proficiency. Some scholars call this book "Zhang Henshui's most important masterpiece and the highest pinnacle of his creative life."
