About This Novel

"The Enchanted Marsh" is a representative work of George Sand's famous pastoral novel. It tells the story of a young farmer, Germain, who is unfortunately widowed and lives with his three children. His father-in-law kindly introduced him to a wealthy widow from a neighboring village as his wife, so Germain and his young son Pierre went to propose marriage. They also traveled with the poor shepherdess from the neighboring family. On the way, they camped beside a pond that the locals called the "Magic Swamp." The tranquility, mysterious and unique scenery of the countryside in the novel add a strong romantic color to the love experience of the hero and heroine. George Sand undoubtedly idealized the love and rural scenery of young peasant men and women. The ideal world and ideal characters described by the author appear as the opposite of the ugly phenomena of capitalist society. Although they lack profundity, they have the value of positive ideals.
