About This Novel
Embroidered shoes and the little feet inside once became the symbol of women in Jinxu City in an era. Unai's grandmother is the final representative of this symbol. During the days when we came here to practice Emei Lao Tao martial arts, as disciples, Wu Nai and I ran there every morning before dawn and struggled to lift the weight of the stone lion under a tall yarrow tree. In the darkness, a steel pipe passed through the hollow of the stone lion's upper body. One of us squatted at one end, half-bent, "whooshing" and swinging hard from side to side in a rhythmic manner. Just like the long gray-black cloth that Wu Nai's grandma must use every day, it is rolled up bit by bit in the dark, wrapped tightly by the little feet, and then slowly put into the embroidered shoes with pointed upturned toes.
