About This Novel
"Disillusionment" mainly tells the story of two talented and ambitious young people whose ideals were disillusioned during France's transition to a capitalist society. Lucien, a young careerist, took his works to Paris and dreamed of becoming famous. He was born poor but grew up doted on, but he couldn't resist the temptation of Parisian society's materialistic desires; for the sake of fleeting fame, wealth and pleasure, he did not hesitate to sell his talent and conscience again and again. Whenever new interests arise, he can quickly abandon his original companions, eventually ending up in ruins. ... Balzac spent 8 years to complete this work, calling it "the most important work among my works". Zweig also believed that this largest work written by Balzac was his "most personal and remarkable work". From this work, we can not only read Balzac's most penetrating analysis of himself and the times in which he lived, but also see all living beings in Paris society, showing us the hidden evils, dirty interests, despicable humanity, and distorted values in a money-oriented society, as well as the experiences of young people in this social background.
