About This Novel
"The House of Horse" is one of the "artist novels" by the German writer and Nobel Prize winner Hermann Hesse. The protagonist, the painter Johann Wigula, bought the dilapidated aristocratic mansion of the House of Horse as his home and workshop. The mountains and rivers near the house gave him abundant creative inspiration, and his painting skills gradually improved. However, the alienation and estrangement between him and his wife became larger and larger. The two had been separated for a long time. Only their young son Pierre was the only link to maintain their marriage. With Pierre's unfortunate death, their fragile marriage finally came to an end. Desperate, he decided to leave Europe, a sad place, and go to India to heal his mental wounds.
