About This Novel
This book is Coetzee's debut novel. The novel describes a figure who served the U. S. Government during the Vietnam War and worked hard to invent an invincible psychological warfare system. At the same time, his personal life was terrible. The man's whims are juxtaposed with an eighteenth-century Boer expedition report in the heart of Africa, showing two different ways of escaping from the world - one is intellectual exaggeration and psychological arrogance, the other is a life process full of vitality and wildness. The two reflect each other, thus providing readers with a feast of coldly poetic imagination and allegory.
