Chapter 9 Commentary
A girl like Scarlett, who is a bit wild and enjoys being admired by men, will not look directly at the boys who will only pay attention to her. But Rhett Butler can eat her to death with this trick. I feel that if Scarlett is a wild cat, then Rhett Butler is a snake; if Scarlett is a snake, then Butler is an eagle. I like to watch the two of them bicker. It is very interesting, and Scarlett is obviously the dominant one in most relationships. But when she meets Rhett Butler, she feels like a prey. I really like the description of Butler in this book. He is described as a predator at the top of the food chain. It is very graphic. Men like Rhett Butler really look down on ordinary girls who are the same. He likes Scarlett, who is special, individual, and unruly. Maybe Scarlett is very charming, which just happens to arouse his desire to conquer. And he understands Scarlett very well and can see through her little thoughts. He also knows what Scarlett wants - even if Scarlett is widowed, she is still a girl who doesn't want to abide by the rules and doesn't want to be bound by tradition. It's just that she can't really be herself because of the rumors. So he came to be this person and loudly gave the price to bid for Scarlett in front of everyone. This trick was really amazing (most girls would be very angry or ashamed if they were treated like this when they were widowed, but he understood Scarlett very well. Scarlett would be very happy and excited when she was treated like this, but he just wouldn't show it). He really understood Scarlett so well that he ate Scarlett to death. Although neither of them is a good person, I feel like I enjoy them. They are a good match.

This Rhett Butler is really insightful. He actually observed Melanie's reluctance when she donated her ring to Ashley at the auction a few days ago, and Butler spent money to buy it back and send it to her. He seemed to be a considerate gentleman, but he was actually extremely cunning - he must have expected that inviting a widow like Scarlett to dance at the auction would make everyone hate him, so he did this in a few days, making Melanie and others think that he is a good person! Thereby getting a dinner invitation from Melanie and others. Simply step by step! And I guess he was silently paying attention to Scarlett and Melanie throughout the auction, otherwise he would not have noticed Melanie's reluctance when she donated her wedding ring. This Rhett Butler is really the top predator. Later, he even got Scarlett's father Gerald drunk (Gerald originally wanted to teach him a lesson.) This Rhett Butler is really top-notch in terms of interpersonal communication.
