About This Novel

A stock exchange broker had a stable job and a happy family, but he was obsessed with painting. He felt like he was "possessed by the devil" and suddenly abandoned his home and went to Paris to pursue his artistic ideals. After some bizarre encounters, he finally left the civilized world and escaped to the isolated island of Tahiti in the South Pacific, where he injected all the value of life into the gorgeous canvas. "The Moon and Sixpence" is a novel by Maugham published in 1919. It uses the life of French Impressionist painter Paul Gauguin as the material and tells the story of a geek who pursues art wholeheartedly and has no understanding of the world. "There were sixpences all over the ground, but he looked up and saw the moon." The novel's discussion of art and life, ideals and reality is still of revelatory significance to this day.
