About This Novel
This book is set in the Chengdu area of Sichuan in the early 1920s after the May 4th Movement. It describes the history of the collapse of a large feudal family (the Gao family) in the new revolutionary period. The work unfolds the entire family life of a feudal bureaucrat and ruthlessly exposes the decadence of the feudal landlord class and the hypocrisy and cruelty of feudal ethics. The author creates the images of feudal housewives such as Mei, Hui and Ruijue. Their pain and tragic death are a bloody and tearful indictment of the feudal marriage system and old ethics. The deaths of "servants" such as Mingfeng and Qianer more profoundly exposed the social reality of class discrimination and oppression. The work does not stop at exposing the sins of this "family" and revealing its inevitable collapse, but further describes the awakening and rebellious generation represented by Jue Hui. From one aspect, it shows the characteristics of the times during the May Fourth Movement, "declaring the death penalty of an unreasonable system."

Like this book very much. The psychological description is really vivid! From the beginning to the end. I like Juemin because I think a young man should be bold, responsible, and have positive energy. Especially because he wants to marry a bride (Mei Shaonai) who doesn't understand him, doesn't know him, and has no feelings, he can't accept it. What's more, he still loves someone (Qin). Along the way, he and Qin have protected their own love. Juemin has an upright character, insists on new ideas, and always wants to defeat the feudal superstitious system and those cannibals. But Juexin is completely different from him. When I saw Jue and Remaining Hai, I really couldn't control the anger in my heart! Why did you leave the mansion and go outside the city? You have to listen to the bloody disaster. Then there is Hui, and that Zhou Hongtao, they are really unreasonable, they talk about morality, but they themselves harm others, even their own daughter is forced to have no way out. In fact, I feel that when reading a classic, you should not always think that it is a classic, let alone read it in a task-oriented manner. Those who refer to others as "kiddies" or even use curse words can easily be seen as people with little knowledge. The most important thing when reading classics is to have your own opinion, preferably one that is different from everyone else's opinion.
It just so happens that I am also from Sichuan, so I can understand many dialects and sayings better. I think the styles of the author and Yu Hua are somewhat similar. They both have a sad and miserable atmosphere, which is more touching. However, Yu Hua has richer emotions and the author is more simple and sincere. In the last book, Juexin is the protagonist. It is possible that the author is commemorating his brother in this way! The love and the relationship between brothers and sisters in this book are very touching. It is like a small grass growing in the cracks of the rocks. Without the nourishment of fertile soil, it faces the ravages of wind and rain every day, but still remains unyielding and blooms bright flowers.

Most of them are a bit negative, but the ending still gives people hope. The social environment is too complicated, and freedom and self may be really hard to get. The ending is still acceptable and comfortable.

Some people say that you don't need to read novels written by the Republic of China, but Ba Jin's novel is indeed worth reading!
