About This Novel
"The Liar's Masquerade" was Herman Melville's last published novel. Many critics believe that this book and "Moby-Dick" have their own merits and are higher than other long works created by Melville, but few people may understand it. The plot of the novel is not complicated. On April Fool's Day, people came and went on the Mississippi River steamship "Loyalty", and people of all colors appeared one after another. The liar constantly changed his identity and implemented a series of dazzling philosophical and theological "brainwashing" on the passengers. Through the exquisite portrayal of liars and people with different identities and social statuses on the ship, the author exposes and satirizes the crazy pursuit of wealth in American society in the mid-19th century, and violently lashes out at deformed capitalism and objectified and alienated interpersonal relationships.
