About This Novel
"Jeanne" is Dreiser's second novel. The story uses the unfortunate experience of Jenny Gerhardt, the daughter of a worker, as a clue, and truly describes the tragic life of ordinary people at the bottom of society represented by Jenny's family. It tears away the hypocrisy of the bourgeoisie as typical images of Senator Brand and the playboy Lester, and creates an image of Jenny, a working woman who is hard-working, pure, straightforward and full of self-sacrifice. The famous American critic H. L. Mencken said: "Rereading "Jane Jane" made me like it even more. Except for "The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn", it is the best American novel I have ever read."
