About This Novel
"Qin Opera" is Jia Pingwa's 12th novel. It was first published in April 2005 and won the 7th Mao Dun Literature Award. The work is based on his hometown of Dihua Town, uses delicate and plain language, and adopts a "dense fleeting writing style". It writes about various issues that have changed in China's rural life over the past 20 years, such as why a large number of farmers have left the countryside, how farmers have disappeared from the land step by step, etc. It focuses on the profound changes in rural values and interpersonal relationships in the traditional pattern during the reform and opening up era. The words are filled with deep affection for the hometown and thoughts on the current situation of the countryside during the social transformation period. Most of the people and things in the book have prototypes. Jia Pingwa said, "I want to erect a monument based on it as my hometown." It has been called "an epic volume of contemporary Chinese rural areas."
