About This Novel

What you read are folk stories, and what you understand is the world and people's hearts. The 18 stories compiled and selected by Mo Yan creatively tell the stories of local Chinese folklore and the stories of gods and ghosts told by grandparents. This book contains 18 stories personally compiled and selected by Mo Yan. It is Mo Yan's creative narration based on Chinese local folklore and folk memories passed down orally from grandparents. There is a psychic tiger whisker in the book that can reveal the original shape of the person in front of you. It exists to let people see the true face of the people around them; there is a strange woman who turned into a bird and flew into the sky on her wedding day. She flew to the branches to resist her fate of changing marriages; Here are the beliefs, reverence, and view of cause and effect of the older generation, as well as the underlying human face of the Chinese people. Mo Yan uses language that is unrestrained and full of sensory experience to revitalize the imagination in folk tales. He also uses Chinese storytelling methods to reveal the universal human nature hidden under these stories.

I am a fellow Mo Yan, a native of Gaomi, Shandong. Regarding the story in "Soaring", I remembered a true incident that happened in Gaomi. The location seems to be the old wooden field (the old tomb field in the article). My grandfather was a party member before liberation and one of the first policemen after liberation. It was not long after the liberation, and my grandfather stood guard at the door of the police station. At that time, the sentry guns were always loaded with bullets. One night, my grandfather noticed something was wrong in the bushes not far from the door. He shouted to the bushes, "Who is there!" The bush actually replied "Who's there!" My grandfather immediately raised the gun and said, "Come out quickly! Otherwise, we will shoot!" The bushes also went back to "Come out quickly or we'll shoot." At this time, my grandfather no longer hesitated and immediately fired a shot into the bushes. My grandfather passed away in 1999. I heard this story from my sister. My sister may have heard it from my father or grandma. My sister's version is: "A half-human, half-bird monster emerged from the bushes and stumbled away." According to my sister's description, it was not the mythical human-faced bird, but a human-shaped bird, almost like a person with a bird's head and a body covered with bird feathers. Afterwards, my grandfather went to check and there was indeed blood stains. This shows that Mo Yan may not be making up stories. That kind of birdman really exists.

The last article is a striking statement for literature lovers. I think that in the face of this profession that everyone has the opportunity to become, the importance of this article goes without saying. Being able to convey experience across thousands of miles may be the charm of words.
