In fact, the author did not finish the entire book. The author planned to write it in three volumes, but unfortunately he only finished the first volume and part of the second volume. If you only look at the written part, it feels like these characters or plots are not connected yet and are still separate from each other. Almost every chapter is an almost independent story. The first volume has a very strong sense of satire, and the characters in it are really ironic and deep, but almost make people feel unreal. The second volume is more lyrical. I prefer the second volume. The descriptions of social customs and rural landscapes in the second volume are like landscape paintings. The characters are gradually being integrated into both positive and negative aspects, and their personalities are becoming more complete and more real, especially the protagonist who has begun to show glimmers of his good side. Regardless, it's worth reading again. After all, he is a pioneer of modern Russian novels.
