In 1917, Thorne Smith followed his father's will and joined the U. S. Navy as a member. In 1918, he published a book based on the daily life of the navy, which was very popular. The protagonist of the novel, Oswald, narrates the daily life of sailors in the form of a diary. The language is humorous and the jokes come out of his mouth, which is really hilarious. This is a work written during the First World War. It is a story about conscription and the army, but there is no fire or smoke. A group of young recruits, looking forward to the unknown new world, boarded the ship of the U. S.
