The Motherland is Above All Else
by Chen Zufen
About This Novel
"Motherland Above All" is Chen Zufen's masterpiece, published in 1980. It tells the story of Wang Yunfeng, an internal combustion engine engineer, who abandoned his wife and family in the early 1950s and returned from Germany with his three children to participate in the construction of the motherland. During the "Cultural Revolution", he was labeled as a "German spy" and tortured, but he endured the humiliation, dedicated his intelligence and talents wholeheartedly, and won rights and honors for the motherland. His works are characterized by broad-mindedness, depth and sharpness. Structurally, it is divided into three parts: "Berlin Wife", "German Spy", and "Chinese Mother". It spans a large time and space. The stream of consciousness technique is used to cleverly structure the time jumps and seemingly scattered contents into a complete whole.
