This is a novel written by Shirley Jackson in 1959. It was shortlisted for the National Book Award. It is now regarded as the best Gothic novel in the literary history of the 20th century. The story takes place in an eighty-year-old mountain house, which is also known as a "haunted house". Dr. Montague, who specializes in investigating supernatural phenomena, led three young people to live in this mountain house. They experienced various strange situations in the house, and got deeper and deeper into the mysterious atmosphere, and finally couldn't extricate themselves. "The Evil House" is one of the top 100 English novels of the 20th century voted by readers of Random House's "Modern Library" and is also included in the Penguin Classics series.
