About This Novel
"Seven Swords and Thirteen Heroes", also known as "Seven Sons and Thirteen Lives", is a representative work of chivalrous novels in the late Qing Dynasty. At that time, it was praised as "the greatest collection of swordsmen in history and the best of barnyard officials" (Jiang Wenpu's "Preface to the First Collection"). It states that during the reign of Wuzong Zhengde (1506-1521), twelve heroes including Sai Mengchang, Xu He (also known as Minggao), and others gathered together to fight for justice. Each of them demonstrated chivalry, courage, superior martial arts, robbed the rich, helped the poor, and eradicated violence. Later, in the Seventh Son and With the help of the Thirteenth Life, Yang Yiqing, the censor of the right capital, put down the rebellion of Zhu Zhixiu, the king of Anhua, Gansu Province, and Wang Shouren, the censor of the capital of Qiang, put down the rebellion of Zhu Chenhao, the king of Ning, Jiangxi. As a result, the seven sons of the thirteenth son and the twelve heroes were each awarded.
