About This Novel
After the 1898 Coup, Shen Peng wrote a letter to the court, strongly urging Empress Dowager Cixi to return power to Emperor Guangxu and to kill the "three villains" Ronglu, Gangyi, and Li Lianying. Since no one was willing to write for him, he sent the memorial to Tianjin's "Guowen Bao" run by foreigners for publication, which caused a sensation across the country. This is a famous political incident in modern times. The author takes this incident as his subject matter, and the plot is mostly consistent with the facts. It can be regarded as a biographical documentary novel.
