About This Novel
The dream book of a literary young man: There were six pennies all over the floor, but he looked up and saw the moon. "The Little Prince" and "The Kite Runner" were translated by Li Jihong and recommended by Bai Yansong, Yu Hua, Haruki Murakami, Yang Lan, Cai Chongda, Liu Yu and Yu Minhong. The spirit is superior to matter, the individual is superior to society - this anti-secular and anti-traditional stance explained in the book has made generations of readers cry. The protagonist "I" in the book is an underappreciated writer in London. He met a stockbroker by chance. When he reached middle age, he suddenly responded to the call of his heart and rebelled against everything. He first went to Paris, and then to Tahiti in the South Pacific to live with the indigenous people. He devoted himself to painting and became famous after his death. After he became famous, "I" began to trace his past interactions with artists and their subsequent life experiences. The artist's story is based on the life of Gauguin, a French post-Impressionist painter who lived in extreme poverty and was prepared to die in glory.

The moon is as important as sixpence
Idealism without reality is just an angry youth. Realism, without ideals, is just rubbish. To be honest, most people don't know what they want to do and they just act according to the prevailing circumstances in the social environment. After going through college, you will find that there are very few people who really like their majors, and even fewer people understand what they want to do in society. Just trying to survive in the cracks of society, and moving up to a higher class has become the only goal of efforts. As for some idealists, there are very few who can pick up six pennies but still have the moon in their hearts. If you don't agree with the environment, you will conflict and become angry with the world. You can either become a person like Strickland, who can put down everything and remain perseverant, but I think it is more important to become a person like Sima Yi, who can have big plans and size up the situation, and can bend and stretch. Only by living can you be a capable person.
The ideal moon and the realistic penny
The moon represents ideals, and pennies represent reality. The novel unfolds from the third perspective of "I" and uses Strickland's story to deeply analyze human nature, ideals, and reality. ●Thinking about ideals ○ "There were six pennies all over the ground, but he looked up and saw the moon." The protagonist originally had a wife and children, but he gave up everything in order to paint, which made everyone confused. Even from my own point of view, I don't approve of his irresponsible behavior of abandoning his wife and children. But in reality, the faces of many people are so blurred. They live within the social organism and cannot escape the shackles of the system, so they slowly disappear from the rest of the world. So from the perspective of all of us, how can we see the moon? Our complex network of relationships has fixed our eyes on the sixpence on the ground. Although Strickland's spirit of living for his ideals is certainly valuable, in real life, from my personal point of view, I strongly disagree with his behavior. Because although we do not live for others, we do not live only for ourselves. ●Thinking about human nature ○Strickland's wife accused her husband of cheating for her own sake. When the protagonist's painting became famous, he pretended to love her husband very much. Although I despise this kind of behavior, it is not common in reality. Reflect more on whether your actions violate your conscience and whether you are sincere in your treatment of others. ●Thoughts about freedom ○The protagonist's pursuit of freedom transcends human abilities and mentality, abandons worldly stubbornness, and completely follows the original inner impulse. It doesn't seem to exist in reality. There is a saying that goes well, the more self-discipline you have, the more freedom you have. So first be a self-disciplined person. ●In short, personal opinion: The moon is certainly valuable, but sixpence on the ground is also good.
The spirit is greater than the material. I generally feel a bit negative after watching it. After watching it, I feel sunny and relaxed and natural.
The most respectable thing about hateful people
When I first started reading, I felt that the language of the novel was a bit vulgar, and I thought I had bought the wrong book. However, I later realized that this is sharp realism. The words are full of power, the power of evil, the power of praise, and the power of criticism without mercy, and full of blood and tears. This novel is based on Gauguin, the vulgar and mysterious Trischi who eventually died of leprosy, but found his purpose, completed his work, and his soul was released. Loneliness permeated his entire life.
The moon and sixpence? Can it be understood as an ideal and comfortable life?
There were sixpences all over the ground, but he looked up and saw the moon.
There were sixpences all over the floor, but he looked up at the moon. Sixpence is really Maugham's pinnacle work!
As a sophomore, after reading this book, I just want to get out of my current situation - simple study and active in clubs; I really want to calm down and think deeply about the future.
