About This Novel
"Resurrection" is the most important work created after Tolstoy's change in world view. It is the crystallization of his ideological and artistic exploration in his later years. The novel tells the story of the aristocratic young man Nekhlyudov who seduced the serf girl Katyusha Maslova and then abandoned her. Ten years later, Maslova, who became a prostitute, was falsely accused of murder and thrown into prison. In the court, Nekhlyudov, as a juror, discovered that the criminal on trial was Maslova, so his conscience found out and he was determined to atone for his crime and appeal for her. After his appeal failed, he was exiled to Siberia with Maslova and decided to marry her. Maslova rejected him, but was deeply moved by his behavior. Finally, their spirits moved towards "resurrection". In this novel, Tolstoy regards human spiritual resurrection as the starting point of fundamental social transformation. This idea is concentratedly expressed through the description of the spiritual resurrection of the hero and heroine.
