About This Novel
"The Flower of Evil" is one of the four major condemnation novels in the late Qing Dynasty. The first edition was signed "Initiated by freedom lovers, compiled by the sick man of East Asia". The book has thirty-five chapters in total, taking the experiences of Suzhou champion Jingou and the famous prostitute Fu Caiyun as clues to show the historical changes in China's social, political and cultural life in the thirty years from the early years of Tongzhi to the Sino-Japanese War of 1884-1894. At the same time, "Flowers of Evil" is a well-deserved literary masterpiece. Its publication caused a sensation in the literary world in the early 20th century. In a short period of time, it was reprinted more than 10 times. It sold about 100,000 copies, setting a unique record.
