About This Novel

"In the World" is the second part of Gorky's autobiographical novel trilogy. As soon as Alyosha turned eleven, he left his grandmother, who had raised him, and went out to make a living independently. He worked as an apprentice in a leather shoe shop and an icon workshop, as a dishwasher on a ship, and as a helper in the house of his uncle who was a draftsman.
