About This Novel
Clem Yeobright was tired of life in the luxurious capital of Paris and returned to his hometown of Egdon Heath, hoping to realize his ideals by educating the villagers. Eustacia hopes to escape from the wasteland and go to the city through her union with Climb. After her ideals were shattered, Eustacia and her lover Wade eloped on a rainy night and both died in the water. Thomasin is Clem's cousin, and the red clay dealer Wayne has always been in love with her. After Wade's death, Wayne continued to take care of Thomasin and her children as a widow, and the two became partners. After experiencing tragedy, Clem stayed in the wilderness and became a missionary.

The story ends with a half-sad and half-happy ending. Eustacia and Wade drown together on a stormy day. Should they elope? There was no answer, and Tosun married Wen En. Everything has returned to its original state. It seems that Hardy does not like modernity very much, and the simplicity of the wilderness has been restored.
Young people yearn for big cities and money, such as Paris, and Colin Yaobo, who returned from Paris, is a representative. Eustacia was tired of this land and hoped to leave through marriage, so she gave up her original lover Wade. And Wade married Dosun.
Life can never be rehearsed. This is the tragic beauty of irreversibility, just like the beauty of the stories of each era hidden under the earth's rock formations. The endings of those stories may be beautiful or solemn, but in the eyes of those of us who come later, everything can end with tragic beauty and mysterious beauty.
