About This Novel
This is the ninth novel by David Lodge, a representative author of academic novels. The protagonist of the story, Bernard, is a forty-year-old virgin suffering from intimacy phobia. At the request of his seriously ill aunt, he accompanies his reluctant father to visit Hawaii. The day after arriving, my father unfortunately had a car accident and ended up in the hospital. Bernard has been staying with his father and aunt, and took the opportunity to discover a family scandal that had been hidden for many years. At the same time, because his faith was shaken, Bernard gave up the priesthood of the seminary and regained confidence, hope, and love in Hawaii, which was like a paradise on earth. The story switches between third-person accounts, Bernard's diaries and long letters, and letters and notes from various eccentric travelers from Hawaii during the disastrous journey, as smoothly as a movie.
