About This Novel
"The Romance of the Gods", commonly known as the "Fengshen Bang", also known as "The Complete Biography of the Shang and Zhou Dynasties", "The Outer History of King Wu's Conquest of Zhou", and "The Legend of the Gods", is a Chinese novel about gods and demons. It was written by Chen Zhonglin (some say Xu Zhonglin) in the Ming Dynasty and was written around the Longqing and Wanli years. The book has one hundred chapters in total. The prototype of "The Romance of the Gods" can be traced back to the Southern Song Dynasty's "The Vernacular Wen of King Wu's Defeat of Zhou", which may also refer to "The Romance of Shang and Zhou Dynasty" and "Eight Immortals of Kunlun's Journey to the East". Based on the history of Jiang Ziya assisting the Zhou Dynasty in conquering Shang Zhou, it describes the story of explaining and intercepting the teachings of immortals fighting wits and bravery, breaking formations and beheading generals to become gods. Contains a wealth of folklore and mythology. There are vivid and distinctive images of Jiang Ziya and Nezha, and it ends with Jiang Ziya conferring the title of gods and King Wu of Zhou conferring the title of princes.
