About This Novel
It was adapted into the movie "Raise the Red Lantern", directed by Zhang Yimou and starring Gong Li. It won the Silver Lion Award at the 48th Venice International Film Festival and other major foreign awards. The book is therefore regarded as Su Tong's most influential work. The novel describes Songlian's transformation from a female student to the fourth concubine of the wealthy Chen family. She gradually blends into the jealousy of the Chen family compound, witnesses the tragic fate of each woman in the Chen family, and eventually turns into a madman herself. There are both the disciplines of feudal ethics and the struggle of modern enlightenment; there are both the awakening of individual dignity and the surge of life desires. It shows the helpless and hopeless fate of Chinese women under the background of traditional culture, and also shows the process of blooming and withering of women's lives like the ephemeral flower in the pan. The whole novel is full of a certain gloomy, decadent, melancholy and even mysterious atmosphere, just like the endless plum rain in the south of the Yangtze River, which is constantly cutting and chaotic, which fully reflects Su Tong's precise grasp of female psychology and his superb ability to create a narrative atmosphere.

I bought the entire book in order to read "In Group of Wives and Concubines", only to realize that "In Group of Wives and Concubines" is very short. The following are all introductions about Su Tong. Alas, is this considered a bundled sale?
