About This Novel
"Furong Town" is a full-length novel written by Gu Hua. The author has included and condensed the people and things he is familiar with in the southern countryside into the book, describing the social customs of southern China's rural areas from 1963 to 1979. It tells the story of Hu Yuyin, a female vendor in Furong Town who made a fortune through hard work, but suffered persecution in a series of political movements. She and the "rightist" Qin Shutian developed a true love in the process of sharing hardships, and together they ushered in the moment of setting things right. The novel combines historical events with pictures of customs and sentiments, uses the fate of the characters to depict the changes in rural life, and depicts the color and mood of life in southern rural areas. The novel was published in "Contemporary" in 1981 and won the first Mao Dun Literature Award the following year.
