About This Novel

This book is divided into two parts. The first part is a memoir written by Zhu Junyun's daughter Xiong Xingshu, which records the experiences of her mother Zhu Junyun and her family from childhood to adulthood, from the 1930s to the Cultural Revolution. Xiong Xingshu's writing is simple and restrained. She is sad for her mother who suffered an unfortunate fate, and she is also proud of her self-respect and self-reliance. The second part is Zhu Junyun's prose, poetry and translations published in the 1940s. The writing is elegant and affectionate, and also reflects the author's perseverance and patriotic sentiment. The preface of this book is written by Mr. Xiong Xingmei, a famous Chinese economist and the eldest son of Zhu Junyun and Xiong Foxi.
