The book consists of a preface, eight chapters, and 250,000 words. The novel narrates the stories of intellectuals and ordinary workers in Longyuan Province from the early 1960s to the late 1980s. The rough fate of Mao Weilu and Si Yimin, and the life experiences of Su Minghua and Zhang Yajun. The novel begins when Mao Weilu, who is studying at South China University, met nurse Jiang Qianzhi while he was hospitalized. It ends with Mao Weilu visiting his former inmate Si Yimin during the summer vacation when he was admitted to the university's Department of Economics as a graduate student, and ended with a calm monologue in front of his grave after learning that Si Yimin passed away.
