History of History
About This Novel
What do people in the past find interesting about their past and why? Why do the past they pay attention to and the way they present it change? This book puts history into a social and cultural framework and details the Western thinking and expression of the past over the past 2,500 years. It shows that Herodotus advocates human merit, Thucylides values the function of history, Livy's works are full of pessimism, the Annales School cares about the "mentality" of history, etc. Many historians and works are friendly and accessible. History provides a focus of allegiance, self-identity, and "memory" to races, nations, religions, politics, cultures, and social collectives, and each history is a diagnosis of the illness of the era in which it was created. In this sense, the history of historiography is an important part of European intellectual history and an indispensable way for us to understand the past.
