About This Novel
One day in the late spring of the 29th year of the reign of Emperor Guangxu of the Qing Dynasty (1903), a light carriage drove up on the rural official road outside Gulong City, an important town in Liaodong on the Yalu River. The people in the car were none other than Zuo Jiancheng, the new magistrate of Gulong City, who had just come from the capital on a business trip, and Master Dai, the county government officer, who went to the state capital specifically to welcome him as he took office. This official road is not far from the Yalu River. A few days ago, the glaciers were thawing and the Yalu River was flooding with spring water. The hard dirt roads on the official roads that had been frozen all winter had become muddy and extremely difficult to walk on due to the potholes. The driver would jump out of the car from time to time and shout and pull the cart and horse. Although he was extremely careful, his whole body was already covered with mud.
