About This Novel
The first part, "1888: Passeno or Romanticism": Passeno, an aristocratic officer, a "sleepwalker" wandering between tradition and modernity. Paseno deeply identifies with his identity as an "officer." He is obsessed with uniforms because uniforms clarify the hierarchical order of the world and are the most certain thing he owns. But his good friend Bertrand retired from the army midway and became a cynical businessman, which had a great impact on Paseno, who advocated traditional values. At the same time, Passerno found himself besieged by life, unable to escape from the great uncertainty. When he was a boy, he followed the tradition of "the second son joining the army" and was forced to leave his hometown and enter a military academy. As an adult, due to the unexpected death of his brother, he faced the difficult choice of taking over the manor. He fell in love with the prostitute Ruzena, but eventually married Elizabeth, the well-matched daughter of the manor owner. But no matter what he chooses, Paseno cannot gain true inner peace...
