In a large courtyard called Hepingli in a northern city, Xu Fuxiang's family lived. Xu Fuxiang's wife died of illness early in his life. After Xu Fuxiang retired, he set up a stall selling vegetables in the vegetable market. Xu Dajun, the eldest son of the Xu family, is a boilermaker in a bathhouse. The second son, Xu Damin, responded to the country's call to become an educated youth in the countryside after graduating from high school. Due to his outstanding performance, he was honored to join the party and was promoted to a commune cadre by the local government. The youngest daughter, Xu Hongxia, opened the city's earliest personal barber shop. From the late 1970s to the present, for more than 40 years, the fate of the Xu family and several civilian children in the compound have been intertwined with the times, and they have experienced different lives full of hope and ups and downs. The story that happened in the courtyard is like an ukiyo-e painting of the human world, showing the earth-shaking changes that China has experienced since the reform and opening up, reproducing the sophistication of human nature in life and the warmth and coldness of the world.
