About This Novel

When the steam locomotive puffed white smoke into the small station at Bright River, the stationmaster whistled quietly, looked down at his brass pocket watch, checked the arrival time on the work log, and at the same time stood on tiptoes and rocked his body back and forth. He was told that a very important cargo was to be delivered today, so he planned to personally supervise the unloading of the freight cars. Exciting things didn't happen often on Prince Edward Island, and he wanted to know what was in the box; he had been told to be careful when unpacking it when it arrived. The train came to a slow halt. The stationmaster glanced at the carriages and made sure everything was normal before pressing a gorgeous but cumbersome button on his breast pocket. The button buzzed, followed by a shrill whistle, alerting passengers that it was safe to exit the vehicle.
