About This Novel

In 1878, Maupassant met many social celebrities through his mentor Flaubert, and Flaubert was determined to pass on his creative experience to Maupassant. Maupassant followed the strict teacher's teachings and sent every essay to Flaubert for review. Flaubert revised his studies meticulously, expressed his appreciation for many of Maupassant's works, and advised him not to rush to publish them. Therefore, in the 1870s, although Maupassant wrote a lot, he published very few. This was the preparatory stage for his literary creation. Maupassant's "Ball of Suet" was selected into the collection of short stories "Mei Tang Party", and he suddenly entered the French literary world. His peak writing period was in the 1880s. His works revealed the dark inside story of the French Third Republic. Acting on the interests of financial giants, cabinet ministers deceived parliament and the people and launched an imperialist war to plunder the African colony of Morocco; he criticized the corruption, greed and intrigue of the ruling group.
